New Idears

So here we go two new ideas completely different documentaries. First I would like to do one on the history of Wilmington and the cape fear region and the struggle with race. I know people have offered ideas about the race riots and what not but I think it goes well past that. You have the ideology of slavery being supported in the south along with a very interesting history of mix racial conflicts. Even present day it is far from being equal, just take a drive downtown and you can see that. I'd like to follow a family of "old" white money that's been around here for awhile like Kerr or any of the other numerous families that have had control on this area for awhile. Also maybe a newer low income family to show how hard it is to move not up just the economic ladder but the racial ladder as well. And maybe even a family of illegal immigrants. The documentary if anything at all would at least be thought provocing about our current situation in not only the southeast but america as well. The second idea I had was to find out the other two owners of my car (87 4-Runner) and find out where they've been with it and a little history of the car, almost a biography of the car. Then maybe do a road trip to all the towns (significant) ones it's been to. There isn't a whole lot of plot but as we know there doesn't have to be. I just think that's a really cool idea. Retracing the steps of my cars history since I know it came from Colorado and has only had two owners one of which brought it here from Colorado before he sold it to me. Anyway that's all for now.

Long Day

Well it's been a VERY long day as most of my days are anymore. But as far as a group goes we have one now. last in the class to get people assembled but that might not be a bad thing. There's a few idea floating around as far as our group goes. The first was the one I suggested which is the story about river road and the further development of this once beautiful place. The other suggestion is Cassandra's. Her's being the flaws of the healthcare system and how often times long term diseases aren't easily diagnosed and often the patient is thrown from doctor to doctor all of whom don't have a clue and throw you on meds you probably don't need. I say bring back the days of the medicine man; consult the spirits, eat some peyote give the cure and lets all be on our way. I do however like the idea not only because there is alot to film on it(which could be a bad thing for the assigned time allotment) but also because Cassandra not only has very real first hand experience of it, but is also very passionate about the subject which I feel is a must in anything. What's the point in doing it if you don't feel strongly about it. Lastly Jonathan mentioned the idea of doing something with the homeless and how they get dropped off in Wilmington. So this means Wilmington must be the epicenter of the homeless in the region. Interesting and deserving of more research none the less. I'm out!

I hate blogger-go wordpress!

Well, two new ideas. Hmm, I think going on the environmental theme that I was hitting on last time I would think that doing a documentary on how all the development around the cape fear region. It would not only service the local development but the southeast in broader terms because unfortunately Wilmington isn't the only place with a huge influx of people and development. My second new idea would be the haunted/historic downtown. There would be a great opportunity to explore the supernatural but in the historical context of downtown. There's alot of breathing room in that one. Unfortunately since spirits don't like to have their picture taken too often that one might prove a little difficult but you could get interviews with people that have experienced them or mediums/psychics that could help open up the subject a bit more than a camera and some crazy looking old guy talking about how the ghosts used to hide things on him. I'm tending to go towards the environmental right now. Only because I've always been a very outdoors oriented and it wasn't until I moved down here that I really started to care about the subject passionately because there's so much destruction for high priced condo's and strip malls. More materialistic shit we don't need. Not that material things are bad, but I mean come on you don't need a million dollar home that's not over 4,000 sq ft. People and their stupid possessions. Fortunately you can't own the land, you can only change it and pass it on, but you never own it. It owns us. We live off it and we return to it when we die. Not much owning going on there. Anyway topics I'd like to know more about are the cultural differences in Wilmington. Between the African American, the influx of Latinos and the old money whites I think the contrast between the three would be very interesting because you not only have the race dimension but you have the economic dimension all which make up for a very good story if told right.

First Post

This is the first post of the new blog for class. As some of you who read this know I already have a blog at www.theearthwalker.com and use that quite a bit. This is for my documentary film class which looks to be a quite deal of fun(could be at least). Still thinking about what to make my 10 minute documentary on but I'm thinking two things. Either the B.S. the city and developer is trying to pull down at River Road with taking the road away from the river for "environmental" reasons, when really it's just going to open more land for developments near the river. Or possibly something on immigrant workers(illegal) because I work with a bunch of them at work and that would be a great topic with it being so divisive in today's society. Anyway I have to make a bio and what not now. Ciao. -Sean.
